French forward, Olivier Giroud scored a stunning overhead kick in the 69 minute to give Chelsea a 1-0 first leg advantage in their Champions League round of 16 knock out tie against Spanish giants, Atletico Madrid.
The match was played in Bucharest, Romania. Chelsea dominated the first half with 71 percent ball possession.
A silent first half ended in stalemate. The breakthrough came in the 69th when Mario Hermoso produced a wild clearance that dropped over Giroud’s shoulder. The 34-year-old adjusted himself brilliantly to meet the ball and sent it into the left-hand corner.
Giroud, like a fine wine, seems to be getting better with age. He is the oldest player to score in a Champions League knock out stage for an English club, since Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs in April, 2011.
The former Arsenal forward has now scored six Champions League goals for Chelsea this season, his best tally in the competition’s history.
Thomas Tuchel men will welcome Atletico Madrid to Stamford Bridge on March, 17, for the return leg.
