The wife of Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo”Guzman Loera was on Monday, February 22 arrested in the U.S over drug trafficking charges.
Emma Coronel Aispuro was nabbed at the Dulles International Airport in Virginia on allegations of being involved in international drug trafficking.
According to the US Justice Department, the 31 -year-old will be facing charges of conspiring to distribute various outlawed drugs for unlawful importation into the U.S.
State Department news release says that drugs include; one kilogram or more of heroin, five kilograms or more of cocaine, 1,000 kilograms or more of marijuana and 500 grams or more of methamphetamines.
“There is probable cause to believe that, from at least in or about 2014 and at least on or about January 19, 2017, Coronel did knowingly, intentionally, and willfully conspired with Guzmán and others [to distribute drugs],”reads a criminal complaint.
The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) says that Coronel, a dual citizen of the U.S and Mexico, acted as a messenger between El Chapo and his drug lieutenants, associates and four sons, whenhe was in a Mexican prison.
Additionally, Coronel is accused of conspiring with others to assist her husband escape from a Mexican prison in July 11, 2015.
It did not end there, prosecutors claim that Coronel, together with others, were hacking a plan of breaking the husband out of prison after he was rearrested in Mexico in January 2016.
El Chapo was found guilty of heading global narcotics empire for decades and was convicted after a jury trial in 2019. He was sentenced to life plus 30 years in federal prison.
Guzman was sent to ADX Florence in Colorado, the nation’s most secure “Supermax” prison.
El Chapo and Coronel have been married since 2007. There are allegations that her father was also a member of El Chapo’s drug cartel.
