Four people were arrested by Malawian police in Blantyre city on Valentine’s day after they were found wrapping rose flowers in bank notes.
Photos of the flowers, wrapped in bank notes worth 2,000 kwacha or KSh 280, went viral on WhatsApp messenger groups around the country.
Police followed up on the ‘perpetrators’ behind the ‘crime’ and arrested the four on Sunday.
Malawi Central Bank’s senior investigation officer Emmanuel Malasa said they had been collaborating with the police to nab the culprits, for “willfully damaging bank notes.”
The bank had lamented that in 2020 alone, they would incur a cost of 15 billion Kwacha (KSh2.1 billion) to print new money to replace the worn-out ones.
Upon arraignment, the four suspects pleaded not guilty in the case.
Police said however that the four are accused of “willfully damaging bank notes” which may cost them a fine of up to 5bn kwacha(KSh706 million).
