A man in Nairobi’s Kibra area was on Thursday, February 18 charged with raping and robbing a woman from Meru County.
Godfrey Maranga Nyakundi is accused of luring the young lady through social media site, Facebook, by promising her a job and a monthly salary.
The crimes were reported to have occurred on February 8, 2021, in Kibra area.
How it happened
Court papers tabled before Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku say that Nyakundi lured the victim through Facebook Messenger App.
Using a Hindu name Hanuman Singh, he texted her on February 4, 2021 inquiring whether she wanted a job.
The victim replied to the message indicating she was in need of a job. ‘Singh’ then promised her a supermarket attendant job with a monthly salary of KSh18,000.
However, as filed in her case, the victim says she was not told more about the supermarket job.
“He did not reveal the name of the supermarket I would be working for,” she says.
The duo agreed that she would travel from Meru to Nairobi for their meetup on February 6, 2021 and would be received by Singh’s friend Kathure.
Unable to travel on the set date, she requested Singh to allow her reschedule to February 8 which he agreed to.
On the travelling date, the lady called Singh but the phone was answered by Kathure.
Once she alighted at Nairobi’s Tea Room stage, she called Singh again, who answered but said his name was John.
‘John’ told her to board a vehicle and meet him in Kibra.
He received her at Kibra and took her to a house, where he allegedly raped and robbed her phone.
The distressed lady reported the matter at Kibra police post before seeking treatment at Kibera South Health Centre.
Godfrey was arrested and on being arraigned in court, he denied the charges.
He was released on a cash bail of KSh300,000 or a bond of Ksh500,000.
Mentioning of the case was set for March 3, 2021.
