A Form Three student in Bungoma County has died after a botched abortion.
The student, who has not been named, was schooling at Tulugui Secondary School. She is said to have been eight months pregnant.
Pregnancies among school girls increased when schools were closed due to the coronavirus pandemic last year. Over a three month period, there was a 40% rise in the number of teen pregnancies in Kenya, with 152,000 pregnancies reported.
According to the World Health Organization, pregnancy and childbirth are the leading causes of death for girls aged between 15 and 19 globally.
