Zanzibar’s first Vice President Maalim Seif Hamad is dead at the age of 77.
Sharif died on Wednesday at around 11:26 am while undergoing treatment at Muhimbili Hospital in Dar es Salaam.
“At around 5 am this morning, Maalim Seif passed away. Maalim died while undergoing treatment at Muhimbili Hospital where he had been admitted since February 9,” said Zanzibar’s President Hussein Ali Mwinyi.
Although the cause of his death is not clear, Maalim Seif was on January 31, 2021 hospitalised at Mnazi Mmoja Hospital in Zanzibar after he allegedly tested positive for COVID-19.
President Mwinyi has since declared seven days of national mourning.
Tanzania President John Pombe Magufuli has send a message of condolence to family and friends of Maalim Seif and the resident of Zanzibar.
“Nimepokea kwa masikitiko taarifa ya kifo cha Mhe. Maalim Seif Sharif Hamad, aliyekuwa Makamu wa Kwanza wa Rais wa Zanzibar. Natoa pole kwa Rais wa Zanzibar.
“Dkt. Mwinyi, Familia, Wazanzibari, wanachama wa ACT-Wazalendo na Watanzania wote. Mungu amweke mahali pema peponi, Amina,” said President Pombe.
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous archipelago of Tanzania.
