The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party announced on Tuesday that any person seeking to vie on an ODM ticket in the upcoming 2022 elections should be a life member.
According to ODM, any person who wants to vie on its ticket has until August 2021 to register as a life member.
“Anyone wishing to vie on ODM in 2022 has up to August this year to register as a life member. One MUST have been a member for at-least 1 year to be eligible,” says ODM.
The Raila Odinga-led party is preparing to conduct its grassroot elections in March and April 2021, with the National Elections Board Chairperson Ms Catherine Mumma encouraging all supporters interested in becoming members to register from 25th February 2021 to 21st February 2021.
ODM is currently on a drive to amass more supporters In a twitter post on Monday, the party directed that membership from other parties into their party would be done officially through the party’s website.
“Anyone wishing to join our party & is in another political party, kindly download the below form from our website http://odm.co.ke,” part of the post read.
While displaying a draft, the party declared that their applications would first be verified by the Registrar of Political Parties before reaching them.
Seeking to reach masses, the party also released a USSD method of making an application.
“Joining ODM party is as easy as dialing *483*036# on your phone and follow the prompts. Even a ‘kabambe’ phone, you can do it.” Another tweet read.
They also provided a chargeable SMS line where applicants would send in their name and Identification number, 22732.
This, as they explained, would benefit even applicants without smart phones.
For those who wished to verify their membership status, the statement advised one to follow the same procedure as that of the new applicants.
Kenyans taking to twitter, elicited mixed reactions following the announcements.
“@d-sakong: “Desperation at it’s peak”
@shady-kimtai: “Why would someone want to join a party with no progress where only one person is allowed to vie for presidency till death. ODM is as good as dead.”
“@ChrisNtomugania: “Mimi huwa ndaaaani ndani ya @TheODMparty#mbelePamoja”
Disgruntled netizens even went ahead to ask the party to release a resignation guideline for those wishing to exit.
@IsaacChumba2: “Also I need a form to resign as a member of ODM.”
@gluyuku: “RESIGNATION PIA MNADRAFTIA WATU?”
The registration fees for any new member was retained at KSh 100.
