President Uhuru Kenyatta has sent a message of comfort to the family, acquaintances and residents of Garissa County following the death of Senator Mohamed Yusuf Haji.
Senator Haji, a former long serving provincial administrator and cabinet minister passed away Monday morning aged 80 years.
President Uhuru heulogised the veteran politician, who until his death was the chairperson of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Taskforce, as a dependable Kenyan leader and patriot.
The death of Senator Haji, President Uhuru says, is a big blow to the country especially in the BBI constitutional reform process where his leadership shall be missed.
Deputy President (DP) William Ruto eulogised Haji as a devoted and indefatigable administrator who was cause-driven.
According to DP Ruto, Haji was a gifted politician, modest yet a strategic schemer with ground-breaking mediation skills.
“He was selfless, progressive, dependable and a committed champion for a more united and inclusive Kenya. We will fondly remember Honourable Haji as a leader who robustly upheld and reinforced the reputation and integrity of public service. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Haji family, their loved ones and the people of Garissa County. Rest in peace, Honourable Haji,” eulogised Ruto.
On his part, ODM Leader Raila Odinga said that in Haji, Kenya has lost a dedicated patriot and a humble servant, whose last great public passion was the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).
“In the passing of Senator Yusuf Hajji, Kenya has lost a dedicated patriot and a humble servant. We can only thank him for the years of his life that he gave in service of our country, his last great public passion being the Building Bridges Initiative,” Raila said.
KANU Sec-Gen Nick Salat: “Let me express my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and by extension, the people of Garissa County for the loss of their Mzee Senator Yusuf Haji May Allah rest his soul in eternal peace and comfort the family and friends as they come to terms with this deep loss.”
Sports CS Amina Mohamed: “I convey my deepest condolences to the family of the late Hon. Yusuf Haji and the people of Ijara, Garissa County. As a community and country, we have lost a trailblazer in the public service whom we all admired and looked up to.”

His family says he passed on at the Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi, while receiving treatment.
