Eight people died this morning in a grisly road accident involving a trailer and a Matatu van along the Nairobi- Nakuru highway.
The accident happened near St Maryβs Hospital, Gilgil, at around 5am.
Gilgil Sub County police Commander John Onditi says the cause of the accident is yet to be established. βMy team arrived at the scene and was able to rescue several survivors. We are currently investigating the cause of the accident.β Β Β
Police and Kenya Red Cross emergency team were among the first responders at the scene. Several passengers were trapped inside the twisted wreckage of the matatu.
Peter Kiragu, a Boda Boda rider told TV47 Digital that the matatu was travelling towards Nairobi from Nakuru while the trailer was travelling in the opposite direction. βIt seems the matatu driver was overtaking and failed to get back to his lane on time,β he said. βVisibility was somehow also poor.β
Nairobi-Nakuru Highway is one of the most dangerous roads to drive on in Kenya. According to the National Transport Safety Authority, over 3,000 people are killed in road accidents in Kenya every year.
