William Cherongony alias “Dr Kahawa”, 96, from Baringo North shocked the nation when he spelled out his dying wish- being baptised.
Unlike others in his age whose wishes are to have their graves prepared or prepare their wills, Mzee Cherongony only wished to get baptised before he meets with his maker.
Having not been baptised since he was a child, the then 94-year-old Mzee Cherongony told his family that he wanted to get baptised before dying.
Customary to the AIC church, baptism is done by fully immersing oneself in water but with Dr Kahawa, but the cold weather at the time would totally change the process.
His church would then decide that his baptismal would be done with warm water.
“Wakati huo kulikua na baridi sana. Tukaweza kumchemshia mzee maji ili kumtimizia mzee vile aliuliza. (At the time it was so cold. We had to warm the water so that the man’s wish could be fulfilled.)” his pastor, Reverend Elijah Katya, narrated.
Early that morning, electric heaters, firewood lit, men filling buckets with hot water, was the order, in a bid to fill the 5000-litre square dip with hot water.
Immediately after he was baptised, family says that Mzee Cherongony prophesised his own death.
He prophesied that he would die in two years from that day.
True to his word, two years and six months later, Mzee Cherongony has passed away.
His daughter, Lilian Ruto, who witnessed his baptismal, attested to her father’s words, saying that his death did not come as a shock to them.
“We know that “guka” went to heaven. He was very religious and prayerful and talked of going to heaven upon his death. ” Lilian told a local station.
“Once he was baptised, he declared that he was sure about going to heaven once he passed on,” Lillian added.
Contrary to the gloomy and teary atmosphere that surrounds wakes, the Cherongony family is celebrating his life.
His memorial and burial ceremony has been set for the 20th of February 2021.
