A man in Embu County has shocked residents after he confessed to using bhang as a vegetable since 1972.
Gerald Njiru Ireri from Mugui village in Embu East Sub-County was arrested after the illegal plant was nabbed in his farm.
After his arrest, Ireri further confessed that a man who used to live in the forest introduced him to cannabis in 1970s.
The area chief said that he got information that Ireri had a nursery of the plant from members of the public, prompting him to initiate the raid
“I am a God-fearing man and the chief has uprooted my plants without my consent. This is a traditional herb which needs to be adopted for its medicinal value,” Ireri told The Standard.
Apparently, Ireri has previously served two separate jail terms over the growing of cannabis.
His wife, who said that he has been trying to stop his husband from growing the plant but to no avail, has also been arrested.
Kenyans on Twitter (KoT) have reacted to the story, citing that even former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko confessed to smoking bhang at Parliament’s precincts.
@Pmwanyosh says, “Enyewe mbona tunaonea huyu jamaa. Tuliskia hadharani some guys are smoking “sigara kubwa”. At least this fella is eating it. It’s hard to get kienyeji out here…better grow it yourself.”
Das kapital opined, “Release this innocent man he has been consuming it just as vegetables since 1972.”
Mr_Mbog says, “We should petition for this man to be set free, looks quite innocent. He should start the revolution.”
