Thousands of families in Kibos, Kisumu County, spend the night in the cold after their houses were demolished on Friday night.
The over 5,000 families were woken up by Kenya Railway’s bulldozers that embarked on the demolishing exercise under tight security provided by police.
Police officer lobbied tear gas canisters to forcefully evict the helpless families. They have now been rendered homeless, with a majority with no other place to go.
The families have been left reeling while trying to salvage their property under the rubble.
Most of the affected families are from the Nubian community who had moved to court to stop the eviction. They had appealed to the national government to resettle them elsewhere.
The Kenya Railways had issued a notice for families to vacate, with demolitions meant to pave way for the rehabilitation of the Nakuru-Kisumu railway line.
