Five churches have been torched in Otamba sub location Kisii central, in the past one week.
These are St. Monica Catholic church, the local branch of Seventh Day Adventist, Worldwide Ministries, Legio Maria and Otamba PAG. The PAG church was torched last Saturday.
The arsonists, whose motives are not yet known, have been smearing the churches’ inner walls with faeces and drawing weird images before setting the sanctuaries alight. One of the images depicts a cross, and two people beside it.
Fires Between 1am and 3am
The arsonists have also also targeted several homes. The fires are lit between 1am and 3am.
“We have good leads and will soon nab the suspects,” said Kisii County Police Commander Jebel Munene.
A village elder from the location cautioned against the dastardly act, saying it might bring a curse to the area.
“I would like to urge those behind these acts to come back to church, repent and God will forgive them,” says local Pastor Nicodemu Mouko.
“The church has taken a stand against some actions such as drug abuse and illicit brews. It is possible that the arsonists consume drugs and that’s why they are engaging in these demonic acts,” said Fr Lawrence Nyaanga of the local Catholic church.
