In Summary
  • Kananu is taking over from Benson Mutura, who relinquished his acting position and will now resume his duties as the Speaker of the county assembly.
  • This invites the Assumption of Office Committee to be formed and gazetted for Kananu to assume office in full capacity as the governor.

Anne Kananu Mwenda on Monday officially took over the office of the Nairobi County governor in an acting capacity.

Kananu is taking over from Benson Mutura, who relinquished his acting position and will now resume his duties as the Speaker of the county assembly.

Kananu promised to lead from the front in ensuring that Nairobians get the much-needed services they require.

While lauding the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) “for the good work they have done over the past few months”, Kananu committed to working closely with the agency.

“I’m not a politician and I will not start being one. For the avoidance of doubt, my principal partner in delivering services in Nairobi is NMS DG Mohamed Badi and his team,” said Kananu.

Following her vetting, approval and the subsequent swearing in of Kananu last week, it meant that Nairobi County had a substantive deputy governor.

Article 182 clause 2 of the Constitution states that if a vacancy occurs in the office of the county governor, the deputy governor shall assume office for the remainder of the term.

This invites the Assumption of Office Committee to be formed and gazetted for Kananu to assume office in full capacity as the governor.

The new development throws the scheduled by-election into disarray. Nairobians are on the verge of getting Mike Sonko’s replacement without going to the polls.
