Long-serving Secretary General of Central Organization of Trade Unions Francis Atwoli plans to retire.

Atwoli has held the post since 2001. Yesterday, he shared photos of himself in his “small farm in Nakuru”, where he plans to retreat to.

“Spending the evening in my small farm in Nakuru looking after my cows and the hays being prepared for the dry season, as I prepare to retire,” he said.

The photos show Atwoli disembarking from a farm tractor, against a back drop of prized dairy cows and rolling grasslands of hay. No. Small. Farm.

Besides his role at COTU, Atwoli is also an influential political operative beleived to have President Uhuru Kenyatta’s ear. His sprawling Ildamat residence in Kitengela, Kajiado County, has hosted politburos where major political decisions have been formulated.

Atwoli is a proponent of the Building Bridges Initiative and has publicly denounced Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 presidential dreams.

The polygamous father of 17 children has had an illustrios career. He was born in 1949. His first job was as a technician at the then Kenya Posts and Telecommunication Corporation.

Besides COTU Secretary General, Atwoli is also non-executive Director, National Bank of Kenya, Chairman, East African Trade Union Confederation, President, Trade Union Federation of Eastern Africa, and Organisation of African Trade Union Unity, member of the governing body of the International Labour Organization, Vice President, International Labour Conference, and International Trade Union Confederation, and Secretary General, Kenya Plantation & Agricultural Workers Union.
