In Summary
  • On Sunday, a bullish Kang’ata had said that if BBI is to pass in Mt Kenya, then its proposers must join hands with the Tangatanga team.
  • Kang’ata was supposed to attend yesterday’s presser at the Jubilee Party headquarters in Pangani, but he switched off his phone.

Reports are emerging that Senate Majority Whip Irungu Kang’ata has declined to recant his letter to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The Murang’a Senator did not commit to recanting the letter suggesting that BBI is unpopular in Mt Kenya, during a high profile meeting with Jubilee Party officials.

The meeting was reportedly convened to try and convince Senator Kang’ata to publicly apologise and recant the controversial letter that said only two out of ten people support BBI in Mt Kenya region.

The Standard reports that some of those in attendance during the meeting include Senate Majority leader Samuel Poghisio, National Assembly Majority leader Amos Kimunya, Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo, and Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju.

On Sunday, a bullish Kang’ata had said that if BBI is to pass in Mt Kenya, then its proposers must join hands with the Tangatanga team.

“Based on a survey I conducted during the December 2020 holidays, I have concluded BBI is unpopular in Mt Kenya… Out of every 10 persons I surveyed, six oppose it, two support it, and two others are indifferent,” Kang’ata’s letter read in part.

Speaking to Inooro TV, Kang’ata said that currently BBI is publicised by a section of the Jubilee coalition members and that is why it is unpopular in the region.

He has since been stripped of his position as the BBI coordinator in the region, but has refused to resign from his senate position because “I have done nothing wrong.”

It is also emerging that Kang’ata snubbed a meeting with Jubilee leadership on Wednesday.

Kang’ata was supposed to attend yesterday’s presser at the Jubilee Party headquarters in Pangani, but he switched off his phone.
