Wiper party has unveiled Agnes Kavindu Muthama as its candidate for the upcoming Senatorial by-election in Machakos county.
Kavindu is the ex-wife of Johnstone Muthama. Muthama held the seat from 2013 until 2017 on a Wiper party ticket.
The seat fell vacant following the death of Boniface Mutinda last month. Independence and Electoral Boundaries Commission has set the date for March 18.
“We have confidence that Agnes is going to be the next senator for Machakos County,” party leader Kalonzo Musyoka said.
To clear the air on the potential conflict between Muthama and the new candidate, Kalonzo said, “As wiper party we have no business in breaking families by nominating Agnes Kavindu Muthama for Machakos seat. We nominated her because of her qualifications but fortunately she shares a name with others.”
Muthama and Agnes divorced in 1983. Agnes unsuccessfully vied for Machakos Woman Representative seat on a Jubilee ticket in 2017. She has been a member of the Building Bridges Initiative taskforce.
“We see a leader…mama anayejali watu. (a lady who cares about others,” added Kalonzo.
