Grief engulfed Adungosi village in Busia County on Tuesday after a child killed himself.

The class eight pupil committed suicide after he was allegedly accused of stealing KSh20.

Residents were in disbelief when they visited the scene where the incident occurred.

In a video seen by TV47 Digital, villagers could hold the heartbreak no longer as gut-wrenching sobs tore through their chest.

The class 8 candidates was to sit for his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams on March 22 and conclude on March 24.

Worrying trend

Suicide cases among young people in Kenya has been a worrying trend in the recent past.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is ranking suicide as the second leading cause of death among young people aged between 15-29 years in Kenya.

Among reasons psychologists have given for this worrying trend is;

  1. The disconnect between children and their parents.
  2. Most youths commit suicide in their desperate cry for attention.
  3. frustration by the young people mostly caused by unemployment.

The research by WHO says that the move to by the Ministry of Education to change the curriculum.

“The education system in the Country should adequately prepare the students for life after school. This can be through the introduction of skill-based courses that can guarantee self-employment after completion of studies,” says the report.
