Senator Kipchumba Murkomen on Tuesday said that he will marshal other Jubilee members to oppose any attempt by the party to remove Irungu Kang’ata from his Majority Whip position.
The Murang’a senator is under fire after his letter advising President Uhuru Kenyatta that BBI is unpopular in Mt. Kenya leaked to the media, with Murkomen envisioning a scenario where party leadership will want to oust him.
“If Jubilee Party Leadership calls for a meeting to remove Majority Whip @HonKangata, we shall attend the meeting & vehemently oppose his ejection.
“Instead we shall remove none Party members & replace with Party members. It doesn’t matter what he did to @susankihika & I, We shall oppose,” said Murkomen.
In the letter seen on Sunday, Kang’ata had said that BBI is set for failure in the region, advising President Uhuru to change strategy.
This came just a day after party vice chair David Murathe announced intentions to expel errant members from the party, following Kandara MP Alice Wahome’s attack on President Uhuru.
Senators Murkomen and Susan Kihika were removed from their positions as majority leader and majority whip respectively, in a Jubilee party purge that targeted DP William Ruto’s allies.
In a move that was seen by political pundits as President Uhuru taking control of the party and clipping DP Ruto’s wings ahead of 2022 elections, the duo were replaced by KANU’s Samuel Poghisio and Kang’ata respectively.
The purge also saw DP Ruto allies de-whipped from influential House Committees positions for “not being loyal to the party”.
MPs Aden Duale, another of Ruto’s strong ally, was also removed as National Assembly majority leader position, and replaced with Kipipiri MP Amos Kimunya.
