Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura is set to be sworn in as the acting Governor, following the impeachment of Mike Sonko.
The stage is already set at Charter Hall, to swear in a man who was just elected speaker of the county assembly in August.
The former Makadara MP will hold the powerful office for a period of 60 days as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) prepares to conduct fresh elections.
Unlike in other counties where the impeachment or death of a governor meant their respective deputy governors assume office, Nairobians will be forced to go to the polls again, because Sonko’s deputy, Polycarp Igathe, resigned and was never replaced.
Although one of the original proposals of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report had called for Nairobi County to be under the National Government, the final report still maintains Nairobi as a county.
