Videos have emerged of ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa trading barbs while on the campaign trail for Mswambeni parliamentary seat.
Feisal Abdallah an independent candidate, is pitted against ODM’s Omari Boga in the race to fill the seat that fell vacant following the death of Suleiman Dori last March.
Abdallah is believed to enjoy the backing of Deputy President William Ruto, while Boga is supported by the ODM coastal machinery led by Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho.
Both political factions have attracted allied politicians to campaign for their candidate, in what seems to be a preview of the 2022 elections.
Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya, a political nemesis of Joho is leading the campaign for Abdallah. Others in her camp are Nyali MP Mohamed Ali, Jumwa, and former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar.
While on campaign trail yesterday, Sifuna and Jumwa traded barbs using unprintables that portray the murk in Kenya’s politics.
“Oh tutamshika Aisha Jumwa sijui tumfanyie nini. Kama ni kufanywa nlifanywa zamani. Kwa hivyo hayo mimi hayanitishi. Kawaambieni Jumwa sio bikira (Oh, they are threatening to rape me. I am not scared. Tell them Jumwa is not a virgin), ” Jumwa says.
Sifuna responds to the comments by saying he doesn’t even recognize Aisha Jumwa as a member of ODM, since she was booted from the party. “Niliskia akisema hapa eti tunampangia hila eti sijui tumshike tumnajisi. Hata kama wewe ni wa kunajisi si unaangalia mtu unanajisi? Mimi kama mwanamume mluhya hata ile kazi tunafanya kwa kitanda tunaangalia vitu zinalika… (I heard her claiming that we are planning on violating her. Well, even if one is a rapist, you choose the calibre of your victim. As a Luhya man, we are choosy on who to take to bed.”
The remarks drew a slew of condemnation online, with many observers saying Sifuna was condoning rape.
Rape not Justifiable
“So Sad when a whole ODM SG Edwin Sifuna thinks rape allegations are funny!! whether it’s against a beautiful or an ‘ugly’ girl there’s no justifiable rape. Choose your leaders wisely,” wrote Sylvia Wangechi.
Surprising, there are those who supported Sifuna’s remarks: “Ukiwa na PANG’ANG’A, wajibiwa na NG’ANG’APA… boom boom boom (When you are a loud mouth, you are answered in the same manner), ” twitted ODM Communications Director Philip Etale.
