Why Father John Pesa has been ordered to pay 21-year-old man Sh500,000

  • Father John Pesa, his church and one of the boy’s parents have been ordered to pay Sh500,000 for compensation for detaining him for 25 months.
  • As a result of the detention, the now 21-year-old man missed to sit for his KCSE exams.
  • Father Pesa came into limelight when in a bid to liken DP Ruto to Biblical David who defeated the giant Goliath using a slingshot, he mistakenly referred to David as “King Solomon.”

Just when you thought you have heard it all from Father John Pesa, then this happens…

The controversial Coptic Holy Ghost Church leader was on Friday, October 23 found guilty of illegally detaining a 21-year-old man for 25 months.

Apparently, Father Pesa together with his congregants and one of the man’s parents in July 2017 confined him in chains within the church compound until May 2019.

As a result of this ‘spiritual healing process’, the boy, whom the court has identified as SOO, missed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.

The High Court in Kisumu has therefore ordered Father Pesa to pay the man Sh500,000 as compensation for violating SOO’s right to education and torturing him.

The court was told that teachers realised something was wrong with SOO after his performance dropped in July 2017 and advised his parents to seek medical treatment.

However, instead of the parents seeking medical help, they took SOO to Father Pesa’s church for spiritual healing. At this time, two months only were remaining for SOO to attain the age of 18.

One of the parents sought to have SOO released but Father Pesa and the other parent rejected. The parent then resorted to suing the church and Father Pesa.

Father Pesa’s limelight

Father Pesa came into limelight after a group of religious leaders from Nyanza region visited Deputy President (DP) William Ruto’s Sugoi home in Uasin Gishu County.

In a bid to liken DP Ruto to the Biblical David who defeated the giant Goliath using a slingshot, Pesa mistakenly referred to David as “King Solomon.”

He was the subject of ridicule for this, only to come back later and water down the criticisms by saying that he is old, and people should not create a farce out of it.
