Farewell Diego: The superhero anti-poaching dog of Ol Pejeta dies

Diego, a brave Belgian Malinois dog that has been the face of anti-poaching at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Laikipia County, is dead.

Diego, who has been the star of Ol Pejeta’s K-9 Unit for over 5 years, was euthanised on Monday, October 19 after being diagnosed with bone cancer.

Confirming the sad news on Wednesday, October 21, the conservancy said that a team of veterinary doctors had considered a leg amputation to save Diego’s life, but his blood tests revealed Diego was also suffering from liver and pancreatic failure and that the disease was in a much more advanced stage.

“He was put to rest while surrounded by his keepers and handlers who were profoundly affected by this loss,” said the conservancy.

Diego was born on July 7th, 2013 in Malindi, Kenya. The canine which specialised as an attacker was the last born of 10 siblings.

Apart from being an obedient and intelligent dog that was always calm when in his kennel, Diego could also track and search for firearms and ammunition.

Diego was instrumental to security operations in the region and during his years of service, he assisted in firearm and ammunition recovery from cattle rustlers at Wamba, Samburu County.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy adds: “He took part in a poacher recovery operation at Lake Nakuru National Park. At Shaba National Reserve and Westgate Conservancy, he took part in tracking cattle rustlers where two National Police Reservists were shot dead but the stolen cattle recovered. And of course, he assisted in many ambushes here at Ol Pejeta Conservancy where he will be truly missed.”
