Onesmus Masaku, the Makueni-based lawyer whose hand was chopped off by a policewoman, has died.
The lawyer died on Sunday, October 18 noon at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) where he has been receiving treatment.
Police Constable Nancy Njeri is accused of attacking Masaku in October 7, 2020, under unclear circumstances at his house in Wote town.
Using a machete, Njeri who is based at Makueni Police Station is accused of chopping off the advocate’s hands following an altercation at his house in Westlands Estate.
According to neighbours, on the fateful day Masaku entered his house at around 6:30 pm but was not accompanied by the police officer. They then heard someone crying for help.
Apparently after committing the deed, the officer was trying to escape but her efforts were thwarted by the flat’s caretaker who upon hearing the cries of help, rushed to close the main gate.
Njeri allegedly made a phone call to someone, and few moments later, the Makueni Police Station commander came with a vehicle and took her away.
Masaku was found lying in a pool of blood in his house, his right hand dangling with blood all over.
After first aid was done to prevent Masaku from over-bleeding, the advocate was rushed to Makueni Referral Hospital, Wote, then transferred to KNH.
According to a police report, Njeri said that Masaku had invited her to the house. While in the house, the lawyer started making sexual advances at her without consent.
In a bid to defend herself, Njeri says that she grabbed the machete and attacked him.
However, neighbours have strongly refuted Njeri’s claims as they say the two were in a relationship.
From grievous harm to murder charges
The suspect is now likely to face murder charges following the death of the lawyer.
Makueni County Police Commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan says that the officer will be suspended and the charges against her amended from causing grievous harm to murder.
Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi has also called upon the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to press murder charges against the policewoman and her accomplices, OCPD and DCIO Makueni, whom he says conspired to conceal murder.
“We have received with shock news of death of Onesmus Masaku who had been hospitalized at KNH following injuries sustained upon attack by policewoman Nancy Njeri. We call upon the DPP to press murder charges against the policewoman and her accomplices OCPD and DCIO Makueni,” said Havi.
