A group of women in Tongo area in Tharaka Nithi County has ventured into a business many would consider harsh and not friendly to women in order to meet their needs.
The women have defied all odds to fend for their families venturing into a business that most people would consider harsh and dangerous.
Beatrice Kagendo, a mother of three, says that working at the quarry is what she knows best. It is what she has been doing for ages to put food on the table.
Kagendo’s 13-year-old son who is in Standard 7 helps her with the work.
In the quarry, one full bucket of stones popularly known as ‘Kokoto’ goes for Sh15 only. On a good, Kagendo says, she is able to make up to Sh200.
The story is fairly the same for Doreen Karimi, a mother of two whose business collapsed since the advent of coronavirus. She was forced to venture into the quarry job.
She says although the job is able to make ends meet, a lot of challenges come with it.
