The Msambweni Constituency by-election will now be conducted on 15th December 2020, this is according to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The Mswambweni parliamentary seat fell vacant after MP Suleiman Dori succumbed to cancer at the Aga Khan Hospital in Mombasa on March 9, 2020.
The process of replacing the late ODM lawmaker was halted after the electoral commission postponed the mini-poll due to the coronavirus outbreak in the country.
Other by-elections that will be conducted concurrently with the Msambweni mini-poll on the 15th of December include MCA for Kahawa Wendani ward in Kiambu County, Kisumu North ward in Kisumu County, Dabaso ward in Kilifi County, Wundanyi/Mbale ward in Taita Taveta County, and Lake View ward in Nakuru County.
“The by-election for the various vacancies will commence afresh since no activity had taken place from the date of gazettement of the initial notice of by-election on 31st March 2020 to that of postponement on 1st April 2020 (save for Dabaso ward whose activities shall resume with capaigns from the 12th of November),” says IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati.
IEBC is now calling upon all candidates intending to vie in the by-elections to adhere to the Ministry of Health protocols on the containment of COVID-19. Guidelines for the conduct of the mini-polls amid the global pandemic have already been developed and shall be issued in due course.
