Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has resolved to have Migori Governor Okoth Obado impeached due to corruption charges leveled against the county boss.

The Raila Odinga-led party said that it has decided to take the drastic decision after consultations with 37 out of the 41 Migori County MCAs elected on ODM.

ODM Chairperson John Mbadi chaired the meeting in which secretary-general Edwin Sifuna and Executive Director Oduor Ong’wen attended.

“Due to corruption charges leveled against Governor Okoth Obado & the decision by the court to bar him from accessing his office, the party in consultations with County MCAs has resolved to have a motion of impeachment against him [governor] initiated immediately & have the Dep. Governor take over,” said ODM.

Governor Obado, his four children, and six others were on Monday, August 31 released on bail, in a case where they are accused of conspiring to embezzle Sh73 million of county funds. They are accused of money laundering and conflict of interest.

The latest move comes at the backdrop of accusations from Deputy President (DP) William Ruto against the ODM party.

Last week, DP Ruto accused the opposition party together with its leader Raila Odinga of ‘doublespeak’ in the fight against corruption.

“They have been lecturing us to resign, step aside, take political responsibilities and even asking people to be taken to courts on corruption allegations. Today, the tune has changed to waiting for professional audits,” said DP Ruto.
