Traders of Marikiti Market are counting losses after a Thursday, August 6 night fire destroyed properties worth millions.
The inferno destroyed part of the popular market located in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).
The cause of the fire is yet to be established, with some traders alleging that it occurred in the presence of security officers.
There has been a tussle between the Kenya Railways and traders of the market, with the state corporation pushing for a section of traders to be evicted from land they say is theirs.
Kenya Railways has even evicted some traders who were operating at a site it owns in an ownership dispute.
A section of Gikomba traders also counted losses after an early morning fire on June 25 ravaged part of the market.
