Suspected M-Pesa fraudsters arrested, over 3,000 sim cards recovered

Three suspects who have been defrauding M-Pesa operators were on Friday, July 31 arrested by DCI detectives.

The sleuths working on intelligence leads arrested the key suspect Jacktone Odhiambo Opondo at Egerton in Njoro, Nakuru County. The other two suspects, 31-year-old Millicent Maina and John Kariuki, were nabbed in Juja, Kiambu County.

Over 3,000 Safaricom lines, both registered and unregistered were also recovered from the suspects.

It is believed that the gang has been getting ID numbers of their victims from a loans App known as Scoppe, they then use the same ID numbers to illegally register the acquired sim cards.

“To execute their fraud, the suspects approach Mpesa Agents as dealers in pretext of selling sim cards & other products at discounted prices, and in the process switch the agents’ Mpesa phones before flushing their float,” tweeted the DCI.

The three are in custody awaiting to be processed and other legal procedures.
