Uhuru, Raila mourn Benjamin Mkapa as “friend of the Kenyan people, global statesman”

President Uhuru Kenyatta has send a message of condolence to the people of Tanzania and family of former President Benjamin Mkapa, who died in the early hours of Friday, July 24.

Uhuru mourned the departed leader as an outstanding East African who worked tirelessly for the integration, peace and progress of the region.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga also mourned the death of Benjamin Mkapa, describing him as friend of the Kenyan people, a pan-Africanist and a global statesman.

Benjamin Mkapa was part of the mediation team alongside Koffi Annan and Graca Machel, who helped brokered a peace deal between President Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga, when the country had plunged into the 2007-2008 post-election violence.

“Mkapa believed in Regional Integration and championed the revival of the East Africa Community. In his death, Africa has lost a giant. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, President John Pombe Magufuli and the people of the United Republic of Tanzania,” said Raila in a tweet.
