Embakasi East MP Babu Owino on Thursday, July 16 morning surprised his social media followers when he posted on Facebook a rather unexpected assertion.
The controversial ODM lawmaker posted a photo of a laughing young-looking President Uhuru Kenyatta on a sports-bike accompanied with two men seemingly in high spirits too.
Posting a photo of President Uhuru is not that surprising right? Yes, but it is the caption that accompanied the photo that was unexpected.
Babu Owino posted, “President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta(Kamwana) is the next Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya. My President is still Young and we need him in the next Government.”
So why is Babu Owino’s statement on Facebook surprising?
When Babu, Uhuru relationship went south
Before another unexpected event in Kenyan politics in 2018, the March 9 Handshake between Uhuru and Raila Odinga, Babu Owino was a fierce critic of the President.
In September 2017, the vocal MP was arrested over alleged abusive remarks on President Uhuru. He is said to have abused the President while on a political rally in Kawangware.
After his release the MP did not relent, he told off President Uhuru to compete with politicians at his level and not a first time MP like him. He even dared Uhuru to a duel in his backyard, insisting that he would easily trounce Uhuru in Embakasi East seat.
The former University of Nairobi students leader on numerous occasion faulted the style of leadership of President Uhuru-led Jubilee administration, accusing it of overseeing rampant theft of public money.
The Uhuru, Raila Handshake effect
The harsh tone, however, changed after Raila found truce with his political namesis.
In May 2018 during the state of the nation address at the National Assembly, Babu took an opportunity to greet President Uhuru a symbol that the duo had buried the hatchet.
