Protests erupted in Mathare on Monday (June 1) evening after police enforcing the dusk-to-dawn COVID-19 curfew allegedly shot dead a homeless man.
Reports indicate that the man, whom residents say works as a loader at the Marikiti market, was trying to beat the 7 PM curfew when the incident happened.
Residents say that the man who has only been identified by the name ‘Vaite’ doesn’t have a formal home, and that he sleeps in the streets in Bondeni area.

It is so unfortunate that it is a crime to be poor. Injustices follow the lower class everywhere they go. Medical, housing, education & security. It’s going to be a long night for those living in Mathare. #EndPoliceBrutalityKE #JusticeForVaite— Uhtred Ragnarson ⚔️ (@TamaraKahai) June 1, 2020
