Ugenya MP David Ochieng on Wednesday (May 27) said that NASA cannot take any disciplinary action against him because he is not a member of the coalition.
Ochieng’, who defeated ODM’s Chris Karan to win the seat in a by-election held in April 2019, is among the MPs set to be de-whipped by the National Super Alliance (NASA) today afternoon.
According to the lawmaker, however, his party Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG) has never joined the Opposition coalition and therefore there is no basis whatsoever, either by law or fact, to even associate his membership to Parliament with NASA.
“I have… learnt from media, reports of the misguided proposal by the NASA coalition to de-whip me from the Health Committee of the National Assembly. Our Party, the Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG), has never joined the NASA Coalition, neither do we caucus with it in the Assembly,” said Ocheing’.
Ochieng’ goes on to say, “I understand the excitement in the air about parties trying to discipline their errant members, but you can’t discipline those that are not your members! NASA and it’s affiliate ODM should accept that we beat them in UGENYA and move on.”
The Opposition coalition is set to hold a PG meeting today afternoon at Parliament, with Minority Whip Junet Mohamed saying that one of the key agendas will be the proposal to de-whip members who are ‘indiscipline’.
Although it is true that MDG is not a member of the NASA coalition, Ochieng and his South Mugirango counterpart Sylvanus Osoro of KNC were slotted in the committees by the Opposition coalition.
