IEBC on the spot after its car ‘hit and injured’ 3 children

August 2 is a date that Jackylyne Awino will forever remember. This is the day she alleges a vehicle belonging to the Independent Boundaries and Electoral Commission (IEBC) ran over her three children.

She was at the General Motors bus stop along Mombasa Road, waiting to board a bus to her residence in Mlolongo when a speeding vehicle lost control, got involved in an accident with another car and rammed into her children.

Tyra Akinyi, Lavine Okoye and Chris Odhiambo all got injured in the accident which saw Lavine lose her limb.

The IEBC vehicle had registration number GKB 061D and was involved in an accident with Toyota Axio KBZ 063R. Both motorists are said to have sped off after the incident.

The distraught mother accuses IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati of being uncooperative. Awino also mentions a man identified as Yego who introduced himself as IEBC Transport Manager who has been of little to no help.

“I tried reaching out to IEBC twice in their offices but they kept asking for a statement proving that it was really an IEBC vehicle that had hit the children,” lamented Awino.

The children’s father reported the matter to the Nairobi West Police station but no action was taken. He later disappeared from home, leaving the mother with the burden of taking care of the children.

The medical bill at the private hospital where the children were first admitted stands at Sh1.2 million while another bill at the Kenyatta National Hospital accumulated to over Sh1 million, the woman says.

Awino is now calling on IEBC to take responsibility for their alleged action and clear the medical bills.
