The late Bomet Governor, Joyce Laboso has been hailed by friends and family as a hardworking and dedicated lady.
One thing that stood out during her requiem mass held at All Saint’s Cathedral Hospital in Nairobi, was the amount of love and appreciation that her kin has for the county boss.
Joyce Laboso was a student at the Kenya High School, taught by Raila Odinga’s wife, Ida Odinga.
The current school principal Florah Mulatya while speaking at the service, said Laboso was an exceptional student.
Carrying Laboso’s high school file as evidence of the greatness she displayed in high school, Mrs. Mulatya said that when she went through the file, she was overwhelmed. “Apart from the political positions Joyce held, she held 12 positions in her six years at school,” she said.
The principal added that as a teenage girl, Joyce was full of life, pleasant and caused no trouble. She was also easy going, a problem solver and keen in her work.
It was against this backdrop that in 1975, the then school principal recommended Laboso to attend the Olympic Youth Camp in Montreal. In the letter, the principal wrote: “I hope you give Joyce a favourable consideration”.
While addressing Laboso’s husband, the principal said “Edwin Abonyo, you were lucky to have spotted the girl. You had a great wife. You were a lucky man among many.”
Joyce Laboso’s High School file was then handed over to her husband, Edwin Abonyo.
Joyce Laboso died at the Nairobi Hospital after a long battle with cancer.
