What to expect in the first trimester of pregnancy

Pregnancy is grouped into three stages which include the first, second and third trimester. The first trimester occurs from week 1-12 which means it begins on the first day of the last period and lasts until the end week of week 12.

During this first stage of pregnancy, the body undergoes changes. One of the first sign every woman is aware of is missing periods. Some women experience headaches, fatigue, weight gain, cravings, constipation, sensitive breasts, heartburn, nausea/vomiting, just to mention a few. Women are advised to rest more and eat smaller portions. These symptoms are not experienced in all the ladies though according to Health line.

A baby grows fast in the first trimester. The fetus develops a brain, spinal cord and other organs begin to form. In six weeks the heartbeat can be heard and by the end of the first stage, the sex organs have been formed.

Once you first learn you are pregnant, make an appointment with a doctor. This is because the doctor needs to take a full health history of the baby and mother. Besides that to also perform a pelvic exam. This is what the doctor checks; your blood pressure, weight, test for infections and estimate the delivery date.

At around 11 weeks, there is a test known as Nuchal translucency scan which should be done. It’s a test done to assess if the baby has down syndrome. Any woman in their first trimester is advised to exercise regularly, eat a diet high in fruits, vegetables, low-fat forms of protein, and fiber and drink water.
