Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa now wants pregnant girls to be arrested in what she terms a fair application of the law.
Jumwa said it is unfair and unreasonable to arrest boys who impregnate girls and leave the pregnant girls roaming.
The lawmaker claimed that most of the time it is the girl who gives consent for a sexual act, therefore they should also face the same consequences.
Jumwa said this in Kilifi on Friday insisting that for early pregnancies to be eliminated both boys and girls should be arrested and charged.
“Here in Kilifi we are going to arrest both boys and girls as the law should be applied equally,” Jumwa said.
Early pregnancy in Kilifi is something that has been on the media just as it is all over the country.
However, unlike the rest of Kenya, a report by Faith to Action Network showed that sex tourism was a major contributor to teenage pregnancy in Kilifi as girls engaged in prostitution to make money.
The report also shows that last year, a total of 17,000 teenage pregnancies were recorded in the county.
