Ahead of Kenya’s second AFCON Group C stage match against neighbours Tanzania, Kericho Senator has told Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama the country must win the tie.
Kenya lost 2-0 to Algeria in the opening match on Sunday in a display that has largely been criticized as underwhelming.
The team, which is making an appearance at the AFCON games after 15 years, is under great pressure to pick a win against fellow strugglers Tanzania, who lost 2-0 against West African giants Senegal.
This comes after Starehe MP Charles ‘Jaguar’ Kanyi was arrested for xenophobic remarks targeting foreign traders in his constituency.
Tanzanian leaders took offence and felt that their people in Nairobi were under attack. Senator Cheruiyot thinks the remarks have raised the stakes for the match even higher.
Striker Michael Olunga has said he expects a tough test against Tanzania, but promises Kenya will put on a more spirited fight.
The match will start at 11pm on Thursday in Egypt’s 30 June Stadium, while the tie between Senegal and Algeria will kick off at 8pm.
A loss will mean exits the competition at the group stage.
