Enforce traffic rules first, Sonko told over digital zebra crossing

Kenyans have taken to social media to criticize the new digital zebra crossing project Governor Mike Sonko saying that it will not work if traffic rules are not followed.

In a video instructing pedestrians how to use the digital zebra crossing, a traffic marshall is seen stopping motorists for the pedestrians to stop. Begging the question, what is the use of the digital zebra crossing?

On the busy streets of Nairobi, pedestrians are at the mercy of motorists as some do not stop, even when the traffic lights say so. This has resulted in some pedestrians being knocked down by motorists.

The digital zebra crossing is aimed at securing pedestrians especially children and people with disabilities. The pedestrians only have 16 seconds to cross before the light turns red.

Currently only one has been installed at City Hall to act as a pilot. Two more will be installed along Uhuru High Way and Harambee Avenue.

Traffic marshalls have been deployed at City Hall to train pedestrians on how to use the digital zebra crossing.

Motorists who drive past the zebra crossing when the light is green, will be arrested.
